Broken Sword-Shadow of the Templars (Director's Cut)

For a game originally released in 1996, the first Broken Sword has been getting around a bit recently. Brilliantly, the iPhone version is possibly the best update of the lot.

Exploring the screen with your finger reveals ‘hotspots’ to be interacted with, a simple tap will bring up the ‘look’ or ‘use’ options. Using an item on a hotspot is as simple as dragging and dropping from your inventory, a useful golden halo indicating when the object is in the right place to be tried out on a conundrum.

If you haven’t played Broken Sword before, its delightful, puzzling and terrific script should send it hurtling to the top of your ‘must download’ list.

Ace Combat XI Skies of Incursion With DLC

Ace Combat Xi Skies of Incursion is the latest in Namco's Ace Combat flight action game series that has seen numerous sequels that take place all over the Ace Combat timeline in various aerial theaters of war since the original was first released in 1995 for the Sony PlayStation. Featuring all the same high flying action as previous Ace Combat games, Skies of Incursion brings the fight to the iPhone.

The plane models are great, and the ground is covered with real satellite imagery which greatly adds to the realistic look of the game compared to many other titles that just use plain green and brown textures that vaguely resemble grass and dirt. Tilt controls work very well, and the various on-screen buttons that make up weaponry and throttle controls are easy to use.

Tap Tap Revenge (Tapster Edition) 3.1

Tap Tap Revenge 3 is all kinds of fancy with 1 player, 2 player, and online play modes and of course it lets you download “real” music from real artists you’ve probably heard on the radio or on your MTV. For the uninitiated, Tap Tap Revenge is basically a mobile variation on Guitar Hero where your instrument is your iPhone and you tap along to the beat of the music.

There's a new system of achieving levels, in which you unlock awards, weapons, and music, and online features have been added including new weapons, shields and radar. There are still weapon-free rooms for those purists who just want to do skills-based online games.

Battle Bears 1.5.1

Stranded behind enemy lines the player must hold off the swarming attacks of the Huggable Bears’ battalions! The cute pink devils look to hug Oliver, the player/Teddy Bear, to death.

In order to fight off the ruthless hugging armies Oliver uses his rifle and crossbow to blast off the horrid pink heads, spilling their rainbow blood. The player fortifies himself behind sandbags and resumes a position taking down the enemy as they make their approach over the surrounding hills.

James Cameron's Avatar

Avatar is an action based adventure game, and the game tells the story of events leading up to the start of the Avatar movie. Variety is definitely the game's strongest suit – right behind the dazzling graphics.

Your character can advance his skills by picking up or earning "wisps", but it's more of an incentive to take your time completing levels. Each level is almost breathtakingly huge and packs a level of detail that will punish your iPhone.

Later areas of the game offer a more open world in which you explore while performing quests for villagers, and even a segment where you are playing the back of a banshee avoiding obstacles and taking out enemies.

Dragon's Lair

Dragon's Lair was first released to arcades in 1983, and was so popular that many machines often flat out broke due to the strain of overuse. Dragon's Lair was by far the most successful of all the laserdisc-based games of the 80's, and is still sought after by collectors.

Dragon's Lair features both an "arcade mode" with the game as originally presented, and a "home mode" with extra scenes not used in the coin-op version.

Driver

N.O.V.A Near Orbit Vanguard Alliance is a science fiction first person shooter set in futuristic environments. Graphically stunning, the game centers around man-made artificial satellites called near-orbitals, created to allow people to live on due to the Earth no-longer able to sustain life.

For the protection of these separate near-orbitals they each came together to create N.O.V.A, or the Near Orbit Vanguard Alliance. A team of mercenary operatives tasked with the mission of fighting to defend mankind. Forced back into battle against your will, you play as Kal Wardin, a retired marine. Knocked out cold by members of the N.O.V.A, Wardin finds himself assigned to a string of life-threatening missions.

Highly compared to that of the Halo franchise which has become insanely popular all over the world on Microsoft’s Xbox platform, N.O.V.A Near Orbit Vanguard Alliance plays out over a satisfying 13 campaign levels, each taking you to a different landscape, including: a jungle, snow, spaceship, bunker and a forgotten alien city.

Asphalt 5

Asphalt 5 does more to fill in the pot holes made by previous instalments of the series than pave a brand new path. Nothing more than a tune up was really needed, and with an expanded set of multiplayer options, new cars in the garage, and much improved graphics, this tweaked sequel speeds ahead of the pack.

A mix of street style and crash action, Asphalt 5 fully embraces arcade racing with events that rocket you through the streets of Honolulu and have you chasing down opponents to slam them against mountain cliffs in Aspen.

The Oregon Trail

The Oregon Trail remains one of the greatest -- if not the greatest -- examples of edutainment software. The classroom classic sent you westward toward the paradise of the Willamette Valley with a wagon full of supplies and a pocketful of luck. Gameloft's new iPhone edition of the game, greatly expanded from its successful mobile update, is a smart remake of the original MECC game. You must still push west, worrying about wagon repairs and disease as you mosey, but the experience has been bolstered with brand-new minigames and exceptional graphics.

Expanding on the educational appeal of the original Apple II release, dialogue with fellow trail-goers provides historical titbits and notable cameos that are as hilarious as they are informative.

Pro Evolution Soccer

Pro Evolution Soccer marks the greatest advance for the series to date benefiting from 360 degree control, while also feature the most detailed visuals and most realistic animation to date, and all new Master League elements. The Tokyo-based development team has worked closely with the PES fan base to implement the most requested advances, and as a result Pro Evolution Soccer is set to be the ultimate football fans'game.

Underwolds

Underwolds plays much like Diablo. Yay for slaying hordes of demonkin and other forces of darkness on-the-go.

Underworlds from Pixel Mine, Inc is an RPG and a classic dungeon crawl adventure game. In this game you are that medieval hero in this game and your mission is to swing your sword and slaughter rats, orcs and monsters to protect the people around you. You’ve to select your character and would be responsible for guarding McTavish’s caravan and protect the retinue from the attack of the malevolent Orc raiders.

Gameloft NFL 2010

Gameloft secured a license agreement with the NFL, so you get to use actual players from actual teams—meaning you can pit the Arizona Cardinals against the Pittsburgh Steelers in rematch after rematch of Super Bowl XLIII until the plucky upstarts from the desert finally pull off that upset.

In addition to full rosters, NFL 2010 features an expansive playbook, 3-D graphics, in-game audio commentary, and a virtual pad for making your virtual LaDainian Tomlinson spin his way free from defenders. In future updates, Gameloft promises online, Bluetooth, and Wi-Fi multiplayer capabilities.

Guitar Rock Tour 2

Guitar Rock Tour 2, a sequel that feels just like the original, only with totally new songs and graphics, plus a local Wi-Fi multiplayer mode. This mode lets two people compete on the same track to see who hit more notes and received the higher score.

Guitar Rock Tour 2 starts with a collection of 18 purely rock tracks—Born to Be Wild, Sweet Home Alabama, I Wanna Rock, and no Michael Jackson this time—and plans to offer downloadable additional songs going forward to expand the game’s catalog. Once again, you can play through in a quick mode that is just any unlocked song of your choice with either four tapping pads (guitar) or two (drums), or play through a career mode that lets you move through a series of cities playing gigs. Formerly 2-D selection and character screens have been either glossed up with better 2-D art or replaced with polygonal 3-D models, and the prior game’s 3-D models have been swapped for new ones. Every city you play in has its own concert-themed backdrop that the camera moves through as you’re hitting notes, showing off various members of your band as they perform. This occupies the top half of the screen during every song.
